What To Do And See On Alonissos

Here are some ideas for activities you might like to do during your stay on Alonissos.  Things change from year to year so be prepared for not everything being available.

  • Relax on one of the most beautiful islands in the Aegean and soak up the atmosphere and recharge your batteries from the energy of the island.

  • Enjoy the fantastic traditional and international cuisine at the many wonderful tavernas located around the island.

  • A day at the beach.  There are a variety of beaches around the island.  Most are accessible by the main road and have a taverna at the back of the beach.  There are other beaches accessible by dirt track and others only by sea.

  • A walk around the Old Village with several stops in the shops for retail therapy, followed by a drink with cakes and ice cream at Meni's café bar right at the very end of the Upper Old Town which has stunning view across the water.

  • Aqua fit sessions at Hotel Yalis in Votsi, Leftos Yialos pool and Milia Bay Apartments run by Di who is a qualified instructor.

  • If you enjoy diving there are dive schools on the island Alonissos SeaColours in Patitiri, Triton Dive Centre via Albedo Travel in Patitiri and Ikion Diving in Steni Vala.

  • Rent a kayak or boat for the day.

  • Rent a car for the day and drive all around the beach roads ending up at the small harbour of Gerakas at the top of the island.

  • Spend some time at Steni Vala on the harbour front for the beautiful view and to watch the yacht's sail in and out of the harbour.

  • Take one of the excursion boats going out into the marine park for the day.  See information on the harbour or at the travel agents for details.

  • The swimming pools at the Milia Bay Apartments on the way to Milia beach and the Nereides Aparments at the back of Patitiri in Paleohorafina are both open to non residents.  You can use the pools if you have a drink at the bar and both establishments serve excellent food in their restaurants.

  • There are 14 signposted walks around the island covering most of the island.

  • There is a museum in Patitiri behind the town beach which has a lot of interesting exhibits from life on Alonissos.

  • Try some of the walks detailed in the walking books published by Chris Browne or Bente Keller.

  • Visit the MOm information centre on the harbour at Patitiri above the Avra Cafe and learn about the Mediterranean Monk Seal.

  • Visit the Traditional House Museum in the Upper Old Village to see a recreation of a traditional Alonissos house.

  • Watch the sun set at the Sunset Bar just up from the OTE turn between Patitiri and the Old Village.

  • The Alonissos Challenge takes place in early June with running events of 30 and 10 kilometres and walking events of 15 and 10 kilometres.  This is one of the few multi-terrain events in the world.

  • Be here around the end of the first week of July for the Alonissos Traditional Greek Folk Dance festival.

  • Be here on August 15th in the Old Village and join in the Panagia celebration starting at 7pm with a recreation of a traditional wedding and ending at 2am after much drinking, eating and dancing.
