According to a survey conducted by the Institute for Retail Consumer Goods Research (IELKA) in June, Greek consumers are making significant adjustments to their holiday plans due to the rising cost of living.

The study, released on Wednesday, surveyed a sample of 800 consumers from across Greece and found that many are choosing holiday homes or rental rooms over hotels. They are also preparing meals at their accommodation to avoid the cost of dining out, and doing most of their food shopping at supermarkets, bakeries, greengrocers, and other local businesses.

With prices soaring, 52 percent of respondents indicated they will not take a holiday at all this year because of the high costs in 2025. Another 33 percent mentioned they will take a short break, lasting about ten days. Only 14 percent reported they will travel as usual, showing a notable decline compared to 2024.

Travellers who are planning trips are attempting to cut costs by staying with friends, choosing more budget-friendly accommodations, or renting just a single room. Merely 1 percent of respondents indicated they would choose full room and board.

This year, holiday destinations are nearer to home compared to past years. Many people are opting for camping by the sea or choosing locations within an hour's drive to save on flight costs. While some still intend to visit the islands, they account for only about 28 percent of travelers. Additionally, people are reducing ferry expenses by selecting destinations closer to their residences.
