Alonissos, renowned for its distinctive natural and marine richness, is presenting one of the Mediterranean's most groundbreaking environmental art exhibitions this year. On June 27 and 28, 2025, Alonissos will feature a two-day event showcasing eight artworks — both physical and digital — crafted by international artists who participated in the Artistic Hospitality Program in May 2024.
The artists engaged directly with the natural richness and maritime character of Alonissos, finding inspiration to create 8 pieces that emphasize the connection between humans and the island, the sea, and the principles of sustainability. These works embody a productive cultural interaction between art and Alonissos's environment and are being showcased to the public for the first time.
Natural Works of Art – Presentation in PatitiriThe event kicks off on Friday, June 27th in Patitiri, featuring the unveiling of two sculptures and a mural that have been incorporated into the island's public area.
The Rame13 mural will first be revealed in the courtyard of the Primary School in Patitiri at 19:00. This project emphasizes the sea as a habitat and life source, enhancing the bond between youth and the natural environment. The mural specifically targets young audiences, with the goal of raising awareness among future generations.
The large sculpture by Micol Cornali will be unveiled at 19:30 in Patitiri, in the courtyard across from the City Hall, allowing the public to view and directly engage with its aesthetics and style. Eventually, the sculpture will be placed underwater near Glyfa beach. This artwork, titled “Aetas,” symbolizes rebirth and reconnection with the marine environment, delivering a message of hope and transformation. The public presentation before its submersion provides a unique chance for visitors to closely experience the form and significance of a piece destined to become part of the ocean floor, serving as a small artificial reef in the future.
In the port area, visitors will find the marble sculpture “Blue Diver” by Anna Torre, portraying the diver as an explorer and protector of marine life. The sculpture will be officially unveiled at 20:00.
Digital Exhibition at KEEK & Sculpture – Chora Alonissos The events will proceed in Chora Alonissos on Saturday, June 28.
Michal Trpák's "Chapel of Gaya," a significant and striking sculpture crafted from metal and glass, will be showcased to the public in the courtyard of the Public Information and Awareness Center (PEAC) of Alonissos at the Old School. This artwork resembles a sacred temple and represents the connection between humanity and the ocean.
Arrival time: 18:00
Simultaneously, during the event, digital artworks will be showcased within the Center using virtual reality (VR) technology and digital screens.
Ioulia Marouda’s VR animation focuses on the protected Pinna Nobilis, integrating sounds, visuals, and scented objects from the ocean floor. Her piece narrates the local biodiversity of the island’s marine protected zone. Timaeus blends a pirate ballad with animation that depicts the restoration of the marine protected area. Leon Butler showcases the interactive piece “Evolving Chorus,” where a virtual reef is formed by the stories and voices of visitors.
Ada Johnson's feature film, a mini-documentary that captures the voices and experiences of Alonissos residents and emphasizes their connection to the sea as part of their identity and community, will be shown on the big screen at 19:00.
UNESCO officially recognizes the ART4SEA initiative as an Ocean Decade Activity, highlighting its significance and global impact.
This recognition aligns with the launch of art exhibitions on three Mediterranean islands—Alonissos, Gozo, and Ustica—showcasing both the physical artworks from each island and their digital counterparts, totaling 24 pieces.
In the ongoing ART4SEA project, all artworks will be digitized and made available at the KEEK of Alonissos, forming a unified, accessible cultural footprint that conveys an environmental message for ocean protection.
ART4SEA brings together artists, researchers, and communities with a shared purpose: to emphasize the connection between humans and the sea using art and technology. This event marks both the conclusion of a project and the beginning of future initiatives, networking, and collaborations.
